A full organisational change occurred on the 26th of February 2021 to enable the leadership of the association to grow, be agile, and become more financially sustainable. The Board believed they had sufficient cause to make changes to the Association and restructure the business to be the most effective way to deliver to our customers and continue our strategy whilst maintaining financial sustainability.
VS is now governed by a volunteer board that set the strategic direction and manage the day-to-day business with the help of a casual and geographically spread mobile workforce of trained Growth Leaders, team leaders, deliverers, referees, community groups, volunteer coaches and managers. Volley South coordinates and facilitates the entire Southland and Southern Lakes volleyball sporting region: Invercargill, Winton, Riverton, Queenstown, Te Anau and Gore.
The Board also needed to understand that generating revenue from various sources is essential to the Association's financial sustainability and for community involvement across our entire Southland and Southern Lakes region. This is especially the case given the uncertainties within our current social and economic landscapes regarding the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19 and its impact both now and in the future.
The Board recognised the need to manage the Association's ability to generate a range of revenue streams and reduce their dependence on external funders. Currently, this has moved from external funding to 100% to 56%; however, they still rely on funders as a significant source of income, and as happened in 2020, they received a 50% reduction and a 4-month delay in receiving annual grants. The funding rounds for 2021-2022 are not guaranteed or confirmed as funders are still working through them, so the worst case is their only option to consider as actual.
With Covid-19 and the issues outlined below, VS needs to consider their future suitability in even more detail, and thoroughly review their Association. The Association needs to ensure its viability at an operational level and cease its use of cash reserves while being innovative during a crisis and building a beach hub to use as new revenue.
- A shift in VS market requirements, product changes to include Beach and a refocus to all of Southland and Southern Lakes
- Impacts of Covid-19 on finances, use of all cash reserves, funders impact and competitions numbers
- More productive Business Processes - Improved technology & Organisations Structure
- Cash reserves and the investment into the Otepuni Community Hub facility
