Since 1987, Volley South has been the official Regional Association & Club for Southland & Queenstown Lakes, affiliated with Volleyball New Zealand. We provide pathways for all ages and skill levels, offering competitions, tournaments, representative opportunities, training, and development.
Since Term 1, Volley South has dedicated significant time and effort to training our representative players, helping them develop their skills and compete at regional and national events. We have also worked closely with our ethnic community teams, running dedicated trainings and events to upskill players and make volleyball accessible for everyone.
This year, we are incredibly proud of all our school-aged representative players who competed in the Lower South Island Championships against Otago and Aoraki. Many have also been selected to represent our region at the Volleyball New Zealand Interprovincial Championships during King’s Birthday weekend, where they will face some of the best teams in the country.
We are confident that all this extra volleyball — from rep trainings to community events — will help strengthen our school teams and lift the overall level of volleyball in our region.
In addition to our representative programme, we have completed one round of group trainings and Winter League matches, with the next round starting in July. This is a fantastic opportunity, especially for Year 9 and 10 players, to get extra training and match experience before school volleyball begins. Players receive one hour of training plus a 45-minute game each week for six weeks.
Volley South’s role is to develop players from beginner to competitive level and to support schools by providing pathways, resources, and practical help.

Fines: The number one issue identified in the October 2025 School Volleyball Survey was teams missing their duties or not turning up to games. This caused significant frustration, with over 80% of respondents reporting that they were upset or negatively impacted by these situations.
Respondents also offered suggestions, and the strongest and most frequent recommendation was the introduction of a deterrent — a fine system — to ensure fairness and accountability.
To explore this further, we consulted with Otago Volleyball, who operate a successful fine system, and we reviewed Netball’s well-established model . Players, parents, and coaches expressed a strong and urgent expectation that Volley South introduce a similar approach to ensure duty coverage and reduce disruptions.
These fines reflect the actual labour and venue costs incurred when staff must cover missed duties or when teams do not arrive. When a team does not show for a match, $20 from the fine will be provided to the team that turned up, acknowledging their commitment and the disruption caused.
Fines are necessary to ensure that all teams can play, duties are consistently covered, and the competition can run without unnecessary delays or additional staffing costs
This system promotes fairness, reduces disruptions, and supports a better overall experience for all teams and participants.
Fine Structure – Effective 2026
Fines will be applied in the following situations:
A team fails to complete their allocated duty, even if they default their game with the required 48 hours’ notice —they must still complete their school duty.
A team does not show up to a scheduled match and does not give the required 48 hours’ notice to Volley South and to their opposing and duty teams.
A team fails to show up for both their game and their duty —this will be treated as a double fine.
Fine amounts are aligned to match length:
